Event Details

Making their debut Australian tour for Strawberry Fields Festival as well as a headline show at The Night Cat, pioneers of Kinshasa’s sonic revolution, KOKOKO! have captivated global audiences with their striking sonics and energetic performances since 2017. In July, KOKOKO! announced their highly anticipated second album, BUTU, out on Transgressive Records.

Their accolades include best live band award by AIF, NPR Tiny Desk and Boiler Room slots, appearances at festivals including All Points East, SXSW, Green Man and Pitchfork Festival, and a placement on the Grand Theft Auto and FIFA soundtracks. Their critically acclaimed debut album Fongola achieved global praise, with DJ Mag labelling it “quite unlike anything else you’ll hear”, while The Guardian called the group a “commanding new voice”.

Lead by Xavier Thomas aka Débruit and the self-titled "seigneur de l’ambiance" Makara Bianko, this special formula focuses on one of the many underground branches of the Kinshasa sound, inspired by infinite electronic loops, distorted by an overpowered PA and serving as an hypnotical background for the growling voice of Makara. Built from scratch and defying musical categorization, these new sounds are the beating heart of the shady downtown clubs, celebrating to help forget as much as possible the harsh realities of everyday life in Kinshasa.

We acknowledge that this event will be held on Wurundjeri land of the Kulin Nation and recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
