A Night with Stewart D'Arrietta brings together the songs of past shows involving the music of Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen, John Lennon and Randy Newman as well as his new album 'My Magnificent Narcotic'. For decades Stewart D'Arrietta - pianist, composer, musical director, writer, actor and producer - was "that guy on the piano".

All the while a slew of work was quietly (and at times not so quietly) amassing and now, as he steps away from the shackled shadows of the keyboard, the piano ironically remains the central instrument and theatrical prop.

The forthcoming (fifth) album My Magnificent Narcotic reveals a refined, considered anger and lust for life - the D'Arrietta trademark, yet now they seem more considered with experience and tinged with melancholic beauty than earlier work. Inspired by a decade of broken relationships and life's ghosts gone by, he feels that the project represents his musical self more than any before.

Belly of a Drunken Piano, his homage to Tom waits, garnered great reviews from The New York Times "rock solid emotion", The New Yorker "a rollicking cabaret act", Sydney Morning Herald "a stage presence and conviction to make the metaphors hand like grapes from every line", NYTheatre.com "Skillfully and lovingly evoked", NY Metro "The man has got Wait's vaudeville, bile and emotion down", The Villager "The grit makes for a beautiful jewel", Theatremania.com "There's something real and vital going on...the guy is cool", The Australian "gut wrenching passion.....An absolute knockout", Variety "electrifying", The Village Voice "brechtacular". He played this show in New York, The Edinburgh Festival , Montreal Jazz Festival and The Riverside Studios in London as well as at home, here in Australia.

His recent 'My Leonard Cohen' was described by Stage Whispers as a show for "anyone with a true love of music, and theatre, and great musicianship". "Theatre Press" describes D'Arrietta as "the embodiment of a Cohen song: sexy, funny, sad-human"

A glance at the song titles of both projects is more than enough to give you an inkling of the terrain D'Arrietta explores with a deft and devilish irony. Beneath the roaring bluster and cyclonic musicality, the sinewy strands of romance weave poignant and compelling stories of life, love, lust and loss - his favourite themes.

Joining Stewart on stage tonight are, Hamish Stuart on drums, Rex Goh on Guitar, Tony Mitchell on bass, Don Miller Robinson on guitar, Sunny Amoreena on backing vocals and be prepared for some special guest drop-ins.
