Willie Dixon Blues Special presented by
John Smoker the The Midnight Jammers

Honouring a Blues Legend

Willie Dixon was a pivotal figure in the development of Chicago blues, whose influence extended far beyond his own performances. Born on July 1, 1915 in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Dixon's talents as a bassist, songwriter, and producer helped shape the sound of the genre during the mid-20th century. He wrote and co-wrote over 500 songs, many of which have become blues standards today.

Exploring Dixon's Influence

His work with Chess Records brought him into collaboration with legends like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Chuck Berry, cementing his role as a cornerstone of Chicago blues music. Dixon's ability to blend poetic and comic lyrics with a deep understanding of rhythm and melody made his compositions timeless, and his songs have become staples not only for blues artists but also of rock and roll, influencing artists like The Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin.

His ability to blend traditional blues themes with contemporary issues helped to keep the genre relevant and relatable. Songs like "Hootchie Cootchie Man" and "I’m Ready" became anthems for budding blues artist, while "Little Red Rooster" and "Back Door Man" have covered by artists such as the Rollings Stones and The Doors.

John Smoker and the Midnight Jammers have developed an electrifying set dedicated to the music of Willie Dixon. The band, known for their dynamic performances and deep appreciation for classic blues, will cover a range Dixon's iconic songs, aiming to breathe new life into timeless tracks.

A Personal Journey

This performance will lead into a second set of John’s own songs, looking back over a 40-year period of bands, recordings and travels. From early days in Perth, where he honed his craft in local bands, to international gigs that took him to London and Japan. These songs will cover past romances, heartbreak, fun, and the future. Blending issues and imagery of Australian rural life with the spice of urban boogie and blues, showcasing John’s insightful and passionate lyrics, combining the raw energy of blues with the storytelling tradition of folk.

A Night to Remember

Whether you're a long-time fan of Willie Dixon or discovering his music for the first time, John Smoker and the Midnight Jammers' thrilling tribute will leave you with a deeper appreciation for the man and his music.
