DOORS 7:00PM // GUESTS: DJ KING O.P.P (Owen - Straight Arrows)
“Garage-rock” and “Retro-rock” are two terms they’re often tagged with, but neither does justice to Oakland’s Shannon & The Clams. With their rich and varied aesthetic, great songs and a colourfully textured sound that takes in classic ‘60s girl-group and ‘50s R&B doo wop, Shannon & The Clams play souped-up, keyboard and guitar-driven ‘60s-inspired soulful pop rock’n’roll. With a penchant for minor-key moods and swinging grooves, the group has an emotional authenticity that belies their fun time name and a lively spirit that confirms it, and in Shannon Shaw they have a voice and a presence for the ages. After six albums and nearly as many tours of Oz, Shannon & The Clams have a huge repertoire of killer tunes and the unflagging spirit that makes for the greatest of live bands.
Brothers-in-rock Jake and Jamin Orrall – aka JEFF The Brotherhood – are firm favourites of Australian gig and festival goers and make something of a surprise return this year. With no new album in sight – last year’s great single ‘Garbage Man’ was their only release in the last four or so years, the brothers are coming back just because they love it here. With an ever-morphing sound that combines souped up but deconstructed garage and psych-rock with motorick rhythms and the avant-garde – as Pitchfork once said, the group has “retooled krautrock for Cameros, rendering classic-rock chug with Autobahn precision” – JEFF The Brotherhood remain kings of the riff while throwing out everything traditional and conservative about rock and coming up with something fresh and alive every time they create. Having blown away crowds at other Australia festivals including Meredith and the last ever Big Day Out, JEFF The Brotherhood return to Australia to play the Love Police Stage at Splendour In The Grass and a number of side shows.
