SEAN MACKENZIE'S "BRASIL" PROJECT
Brazilian musicians TIAGO de LUCCA (guitar and voice), SANDRO BUENO (percussion) and DANIEL BAEDER (BRAZIL) (drums) join SEAN MACKENZIE (keyboards), CHRISOPHER SOULOS (bass) and MARCELLO MAIO (accordionist) to explore the exotic beauty and sensuous groove of music from, and inspired, by Brazil.
Returning by invitation after a wonderful concert here last year, keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist Sean Mackenzie has put together an even more impressive line-up this time around. He's joined by Brazilian musicians Tiago, Sandro and Daniel, bringing the authentic Brazilian groove to the party, and longtime musical partner Chris Soulos (who played bass on and produced and engineered Sean's Brasil album) and very special guest Marcello Maio of the band Samba Mundi. Together they are a formidable team.
Sean has just returned from touring the USA with acclaimed gypsy guitarist Lulo Reinhardt (Django's great-nephew), making music of fire and grace that, like Brazilian music, draws on diverse sources but above all must be played with passion. It's a style of playing that comes naturally to Sean, who has travelled the world to work in Europe, Japan, the USA and Brazil itself, where he taught at the Curso Internacional de Ver o in Brasilia alongside a faculty of internationally acclaimed musicians.
We're especially excited to have Sao Paulo native Daniel Baeder playing tonight. Daniel is arguably the most accomplished star of Brazilian percussion in Australia, with jazz and drum&bass skills for good measure. He toured the USA as drummer with Cirque du Soleil in 2009 and 2010 and has since recorded and produced several of his own albums.
"Mackenzie is a master storyteller. Every piano solo is a deftly shaped little narrative that unfolds compellingly from one note to the next. Those who have been enthralled by his work as foil to guitarist Lulo Reinhardt should enjoy Mackenzie s own music, here consisting of nine Brazilian-flavoured originals. These are realised with bassist Christopher Soulos and drummer Calvin Welch, who mostly adopt an unusually minimalist approach,
so the focus is kept on the compassion of those piano and electric piano stories. On Friends, Mackenzie swaps to thumb piano for a delightful introduction to a jazzier piece, while his berimbau playing on the title track almost steals the show". (John Shand, Brasil album review, four stars, SMH)
