Port Fairy Folk Festival Presents...
JOHN SMITH (ENG) & Guests
JOHN SMITH, praised by Pentangle’s John Renbourn as the future of folk music, blends various styles that connect him to both sides of the Atlantic. His latest work The Living Kind is a masterful exploration of American soundscapes, produced by Joe Henry. Inspired by Talk Talk’s Spirit of Eden, John Martyn's Solid Air, and Joni Mitchell's Hejira, Smith aimed for an intimate acoustic album. The project arose amid personal crises during the pandemic, significantly shaping its themes of family responsibility and transformation. Recorded in four days in February 2023 in Maine's frigid temperatures, the band thrived on live spontaneity. Tracks like Silver Mine reflect the joy of fatherhood, while Horizons and Trick Of The Light showcase his lyrical depth and melodic warmth.
