Event Details

Tangents formed in Sydney in 2010 and released their debut album “I” in 2013, a recording of their first ever meeting and live show. From 2016's Stateless, the band have had a close relationship with legendary New York label Temporary Residence, who have also released New Bodies (nominated for the Australian Music Prize in 2018) and 2021's Timeslips & Chimeras. These albums explore a style of post-produced live improvisation that has marked out the group’s distinct blend of electronic, jazz, rock and new music-inspired styles. Tangents are Ollie Bown (computer), Evan Dorrian (drums), Peter Hollo (cello, effects) and Adrian Lim-Klumpes (piano, Fender Rhodes, effects).

Microfiche are a six-piece improvising ensemble, whose music explores minimalist compositional processes to create both long-form and miniature works. The band formed as a student ensemble at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Under the expert tuition of Phil Slater and Simon Barker, the group initially explored processes found in the music of composers John Cage and Morton Feldman, later reconceptualising those ideas into a body of original material with works contributed by every member of the group. Microfiche quickly developed an interest in extending their playing beyond the class, and have been making albums and performing together since 2015. Microfiche are Max Alduca - double bass, Novak Manojlovic - piano/keyboards, Phillippa Murphy-Haste - clarinet/viola, Nick Calligeros - trumpet, Holly Conner - drums/percussion, Sam Gill - alto saxophone.
