Vita Artists presents
ILUKA 'Mess' Single Launch (FINAL TIX)
ILUKA performs her first show of 2021 on the back of her latest single “Mess” featuring Lime Cordiale. Expect to hear lots of new music and see a couple of special guests.
Deep in ILUKA’s music, you can hear the sound of a wild heart given the space to roam free. The Australian-born musician and singer-songwriter is of a breed you don’t often find anymore — that of the troubadour. Her music, built from the foundational elements of classic rock and beloved, worn-in soul, tells universal tales of hope and love, struggle and sacrifice, with a thoroughly modern lens; comforting and galvanising in equal measure, it is the kind of art that comes only as a result of a life well lived, of a mind challenged and expanded by the lushest, farthest reaches of the world.
ILUKA was taught the basics of songwriting from her earliest years. Her father is a songwriter and guitar-maker who fostered her talent, spending hours on the balcony of their Blue Mountains home encouraging her to channel the artistic energies evident inside her towards music. Anyone can be taught how to play an instrument, but not anyone can learn the heart and soul present in the best of it; it was this early education, the passing-down of emotion from one generation to another, that gave ILUKA’s music its spark, the seed that’s still growing to this day.
A magnetic, charismatic character from childhood, ILUKA relished in the ability to inhabit characters and explore, through her imagination, the worlds present in the minds of the various eccentric characters she created. You can hear this empathy, this openness to the spirits and inner worlds of others, in her music to this day: it’s that element, that rare communion from one soul to another, that sets her apart. Despite its thrilling immediacy, its pop edge, ILUKA’s music possesses a ruggedness, a handmade feeling, that she carries down from her forebears — Joni Mitchell and Jeff Buckley, Carole King and Stevie Nicks.
ILUKA’s restlessness, her need for connection with a world bigger than just her own, manifested in a period travelling the corners of the world rarely seen by others. After a period in which music felt like an unattainable dream, she spent time in a Buddhist monastery, learning how to heal after becoming disillusioned with the western world; intending to retreat from the world entirely, she only left after the monastery’s abbot told her she had a “big spirit” — a gift she needed to share with the world.
Re-entering the world fresh-faced and trepidatious, ILUKA continued her journey, spending time in communities outside the western gaze as well as in the homes of friends and loved ones, learning to build instruments and working on new artistic practises, including writing poetry and singing in a raw, ragged psych band. To cap it all off, she spent the last year toiling in L.A. and Nashville, working with some of America’s finest writers and musicians on a batch of songs that resulted in a worldwide deal with BMG. You can hear all of it — a life, a big spirit, more wide-reaching than most ever dream of — in ILUKA’s music; touching on emotive poetics and the mind-expanding qualities of psychedelic rock, there are diaphanous layers to the art she’s putting into the world now. It is pop music with a soul and a purpose, with a connection to some kind of higher power and some kind of deep, hard won honesty. In ILUKA’s music there is truth, power, and, at its centre, that wild heart.
