Back from the south: two expat Freo acts return for one night only
Doors 6 pm, Band at 7:30pm
Duke of George presents
Claybird & Simon London + the Spirits
For the first time ever, expat Freo bands Claybird and Simon London + the Spirits are teaming up together for a return show to their old Walyalup stomping grounds – and only at the Duke! The double-bill show will roll from those delicious deep grooves of Claybird’s earthy soul/folk/dub through to the Spirits’ atmospheric journeys, whether it be their beautiful ambience, driving rock or gritty blues.
Come along for the journey – it’s sure to be some ride!
Now both residing on the south coast, Claybird were well-loved Fremantle favourites before departing for a southern surf town a couple of years ago. With their soulful songs, soaring vocals and varied instrumentation, Claybird offer up a heartfelt and connective experience with every show; this is a band to get the crowd up and moving – that sun-kissed celebration of life bringing its own compelling magic.
Having been busy in the studio, Claybird will be launching their new single South Beach on the night.
More recently, Simon London has been more commonly found at the Duke as one-third of The Red Tails. This time however, he brings his main band Simon London +the Spirits.
Another Freo expat from years gone by, London’s indie musical career has spanned the globe, touring and recording around the world, playing iconic venues in the US, Canada & Europe. Now relocated to his south-coast home with a revised three-piece, Simon London + the Spirits are recording and touring once again.
Big sweeping soundscapes, soaring melodies, intimate and compelling song-writing; the new band line-up has a chemistry all of its own.
Simon London + the Spirits have released their fourth full-length album and it’ll be their latest single and title track Don’t You Forget About Me that they’ll be launching at the Duke of George. While the new album has been enjoying some national airplay, it’s really only on the live stage where the power of this three-piece can truly be reckoned.
What the press has said:
“This latest album (Don’t You Forget About Me) is a master stroke in a long and accomplished career.“
“This bloke could well be a contender for one of the top-shelf male vocalists making music in Australia right now. It’s a range you rarely hear – some have soft folk troubadour vulnerability, some have earth shattering power & vibrato; London does both -and makes it sound easy.
Extraordinary vocal prowess… his voice is an anthemic powerhouse that swirls and builds and can lift the roof off any venue” Katia Smith: Gold MX
“Simon London himself is a brilliant vocalist.. his ability to make the guitar sound great is sublime… and with the backing of the Spirits every performance is special. They’re a force to be reckoned with, both on stage and in the studio” Oliver Blazevic: Goldroom Music
