Meet Sydney’s Biggest Ensemble of Brown Women Comedians at Sydney Comedy Festival

Laugh your heart out to an award-winning besharam (shameless) line-up of Indian and South Asian comedians living in Australia. No topic is too taboo. From growing up brown to getting disowned thrice, these women won’t be holding back. Your parents probably won’t approve as you trauma bond watching these six women turn family expectations into comedy gold. We’re thrilled to be bringing back Australia’s first and largest comedy show featuring a line up of incredibly talented South Asian female comedians in Sydney.

"'Brown Women Comedy' is the shake-up to Australia's comedy scene that's well overdue!" Draw Your Box

Following a spectacular, sold-out debut at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival 2023, the Brown Women Comedy troupe is ready to electrify audiences nationwide in 2024, gracing stages at Sydney Comedy Festival.

From performing with some of Australia’s biggest comedic names, appearing on hit TV shows, to RAW Comedy National Finalists, and garnering over 30 million views on tiktok, the ensemble is a truly impressive line-up of diaspora women. For these besharam (‘shameless) comedians, no topic is too taboo. From growing up brown in Australia, being bisexual, to getting disowned thrice, these women won’t be holding back.

"In a predominantly white festival scene, our show resonates deeply with the Indian & South Asian diaspora, craving comedy that mirrors their experiences. Last year for example in Melbourne International Comedy Festival, out of 550+ shows, only three were solo performances by South Asian Australian women." said Daizy Maan, Brown Women Comedy Producer (and comedian).

“If you're solely expecting jokes about the idiosyncrasies of brown parents and the weight of unmet cultural expectations, Brown Women Comedy isn’t for you. It touches on some of those things, yes, but so much more – sex, mental health, queerness, divorce.” - The Age

Meet The Cast of Talented Comedians

Among the talented comedians performing include a number of Sydney-based talent, such as Uncultured podcast host Kripa Krithivasan and RAW Comedy National Finalist 2022 Guneet Kaur. Described by the Sydney Morning Herald as both “sharp” and “anxious”, Guneet is a contributing writer on ABC show ‘Question Everything’.

Also on the line-up is improviser, drag king and Creative Director of ‘Scary Strangers’, Ru Halwala, who was also a writer on the latest season of Gruen (ABC), actor Chanika Desilva, who made her screen comedy debut starring with Aussie Comedy Legend Matt Okine in ‘The Other Guy’.

Joining them are Melbourne-based Brown Women Comedy producer Daizy Maan, whose hilarious Punjabi TikTok videos have garnered over 30 million views. In addition Kru Harale and Monica Kumar will be performing on select dates.

Brace yourself for an evening of unfiltered laughter and unparalleled comedic excellence from these comedians.
