Adaptive Leadership & Mastering Change with Paul Cale
Your presenter, Paul Cale, has changed the culture of the most strictly regimented and hierarchical organisation in Australian society — the Army. And yet, he did it from a position of low authority, by leading ‘from the bottom up’.
In this seminar, the former Commando Sergeant reveals not only how he instigated and influenced positive change on a broad scale, but how you can do the same in your business or organisation. Using examples from his own storied life in the military, business and beyond, Paul delivers a comprehensive breakdown of the principles of adaptive leadership and change-management.
Over approximately 2 hours, Paul will cover:
# Examples of ‘leadership from the bottom up’, and how to lead regardless of how much or how little authority you hold
# How to immediately increase your personal value proposition to your organisation and to authority
# Dealing with the constant and rapid change that characterises our times: how to become comfortable with it and even use it to advantage
# Discovering the power of adaptation to solve problems, achieve success and thrive
# How to move beyond the limitations of your technical know-how using adaptive thinking
# Identifying the difference between technical problems and adaptive challenges
# Adaptive diagnosis: why it’s key to overcoming challenges, and how to go about it
# How to observe and analyse ‘patterns of life’ in your organisation and industry to provide solutions to problems and drive improvements
# Understanding the win/win dynamic to achieve better outcomes for yourself and your employer or partners simultaneously
# Knowing your flexibility points: what are you willing to lose or compromise in pursuit of your goal?
# How to practise adaptive leadership without risk
# Ways to broaden your ‘bandwidth’ to receive and act on useful information
# Articulating your purpose — to yourself, and your colleagues and superiors
# How to engage courageously with people at all levels, and receive and deliver feedback with confidence

More about Paul Cale:
Paul Cale is a former Special Forces soldier, businessman and martial arts expert. He was responsible for the creation and implementation of the Army Combatives Program, which is now taught to every soldier and officer that joins the Australian Army. As a result of this initiative, which he began as a sergeant in the 2nd Commando Regiment, Paul was also headhunted by the Australian Institute of Sport to lead its Combat Sports Centre team and establish a winning culture among athletes. The training he introduced was even sought out by Japan’s world-champion judo team (the only time they have travelled to Australia outside of an Olympic Games).
Seeing a need for sports science to be used in support of elite specialist soldiers, Paul then went about forging a link between the AIS and Army, by working through the adaptive challenges that presented obstacles to success. Paul was then asked to work with other elite teams from cycling, basketball and water polo, before consulting for the CEOs of a major bank and IT company.
Paul has since developed several successful private businesses serving the defence, government and professional sectors, with a focus on training and security. He recently attended Harvard University to continue his leadership training, and hone his skills in developing leadership in others.
