Featured Artist: The Buckleys
Byron Bay trio, The Buckleys, are no strangers to the music biz. Growing up on tour with their dad, the drummer for Aussie pub rock band The Radiators and co-writing songs with the likes of Marty Dodson, Jennifer Hanson and Emily Shackelton.
In recent years the sibling trio has undoubtedly come into their own, taking the world by storm both IRL and virtually. The release of their debut single, 'Daydream' last year saw the rising Country stars score the #1 spot on the Australian Country Radio charts and a Golden Guitar nomination for Best New Talent'.
The group were set to travel around the world this year after dropping their latest single 'Money', but the current global lockdown has forced the trio to think outside the box, launching their first virtual worldwide tour.
The tour, which kicked off earlier this month, has already seen the band perform virtual shows across North America, Europe, Asia and Japan. We had a chat with the Byron Bay group ahead of their New Zealand and Australian leg of the tour to find out how they're keeping the creative juices flowing in isolation and exciting new projects on the horizon. Check out the full interview below.
1. How are you keeping positive and staying inspired at the moment?
Sarah: We're really staying focused on bringing happiness, smiles and positivity to other people right now who we know need it. That makes us happy. We love playing music and we figure that's probably the best thing we can do right now to be a positive force during this time! Whilst we do this Virtual World Tour with Live Nation, welcoming viewers into our 'lounge room', we love reading the comments and seeing how these live shows are bringing some fun into other people homes too. It's something we can give back.
2. Are there any things in your daily schedule that have helped you stay motivated?
Molly: A Lot of rehearsing and learning new songs! We don't have our usual band because we're all isolating so we're going back to the 'old days' when we were little and only had the family. Sarah's learnt bass and Dylan (our 12yo brother) is jumping on the drums for the first time with us as well as Dad who was a drummer back in the 80s (for The Radiators!) playing on some songs too. The tour has definitely kept our schedules busy (which we love) and the whole band motivated.
3. You're taking your virtual tour to a bunch of different countries around the world right from your very own living room. How have you adapted your performances for the online market?
Molly: We have in fact taken over the living room and I will say mum and dad love it ;).
But yes, as we go around the world *virtually* we've found each city and country gravitate to a certain sound and style and of course has its own uniqueness, so we've had a lot of fun changing up our sets depending on where in the world we're playing that day! We love pulling in new songs and putting our spin on it.
4. Who are some of your fave acts inspiring you in self-isolation right now?
Sarah: We're loving the new 5SOS album... a rockin' Australian band! We also recently watched the Joan Jett documentary so have been listening to a lot of Joan lately.... she's so cool!!!
5. Are you working on any other fun projects?
Lachlan: We are really excited for another single to be dropping very soon. This one is really special to us and is very different from anything else we've ever done. We also have our debut album dropping June 26 and our documentary 'Meet The Buckleys' just came out as well. And we're always writing lots of songs....So there's lots going on!
Catch The Buckley's Live From Home at 6 pm AEST this Thursday, April 30. For more information and to watch the virtual concert, visit facebook.com/livenationoznz.
