Joseph Tawadros can play 52 instruments, but his oud-playing is out of this world.

What's an oud? You'll find out at the first Obscura of 2025. The back of this Arabic stringed instrument is curved for resonance, while its face is intricately carved and inlaid with pearl. It’s okay if you don’t notice any of this. Because the music that emanates from this oud, composed by its soloist Egyptian- Australian Joseph Tawadros, will be all-encompassing. You’ll only remember where you are when Joseph hits pause so he can talk to you between these transportive works. The eight-time ARIA Award-winner will perform his original compositions with the TSO strings, joined by his brother James Tawadros (percussion) and Emma McGrath (violin).

The Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra's Obscura series is an hour of sonic escapism with guest curators, eclectic music and immersive lighting. It's an orchestra, but not as you expect.
