DOORS 6PM // KITCHEN OPEN // SHOW STARTS 7PM

We at Essendon Airport have always taken the slow and measured flight path that puts the comfort and safety of our passengers first.

Recently we released a new single on Chapter Musicwith our long time pal Anne Cessna … 'Agua Por Favor'.

Then came an invitation to play at Chapterfest last year, where the mysterious Anne Cessna performed live for the first time. As a band that usually prefers a long-haul flight at high altitude, we are now pleased to announce this special Brunswick Ballroom performance.

Essendon Airport began in Melbourne in 1979 as the duo of Robert Goodge on guitar and David Chesworth on Wurlitzer electric piano, along with a home-made drum machine bought from the Trading Post. They performed around Melbourne’s newly emerging post-punk inner city venues such as the Crystal Ballroom, the George Paton Gallery and the Clifton Hill Community Music Centre.

The duo released the EP 'Sonic Investigations Of The Trivial' in 1979 and joined with Anne Cessna for 'Talking To Cleopatra' in 1980. This era was documented by a Chapter Music CD reissue in 2002 . Gentle, inquisitive and subtly experimental, Essendon Airport were described by the UK's Melody Maker magazine in 1981 as “the vinyl equivalent of an attractive lisp.”

Essendon Airport later expanded to a four piece and then a five piece, exploring funky art pop on their 1981 album Palimpsest (reissued by Chapter Music in 2011).

Breaking up in 1983…but reformingin varying lineups in 1988, 2002, 2011, they are back again joined by Anne Cessna with the help of Graham Lee [Triffids] and singers Louisa Rankin, Greta Williams and Mel Taylor. Playing music adapted fromtheirearliest minimal phase along with Anne Cessna’s signature tunes.

with special guests The Glass Picture

The duo formed in 2020 and began playing shows late last year. Their live show so far has included Raven Mahon playing saxophone, Tamsen Hopkinson on bass and Billy Gardner on guitar. The Glass Picture’s self-recorded debut EP was first released on cassette with Hidiotic Records November 2021 and digitally released by Chapter Music in 2022.
