Fun 1 day creative workshop for kids to learn basic ceramics skills.
11 April 2017, 9am - 5pm
In this 1 day school holiday workshop, kids will make a beautiful African inspired ceramic memory jug. Originating in Africa's Bakongo culture, memory jugs were made by covering a vessel with lacquer or adhesive and decorating it with mementos like beads, coins, seashells and small toys or even tools.
Memory jugs filled with water were often used to adorn graves, providing a connection to the afterlife through water, and examples can be seen in movies like Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End.
Experienced artist and tutor Hayley West, will teach the kids ceramic slab and hand building techniques to build their jugs. They'll learn about the history of the memory jug, signs and symbols and common objects traditionally used for decoration.
They'll then get to find and choose their own modern day objects to decorate their own memory jug.
Kids will love getting their hands dirty while learning ceramic techniques in this fun full day holiday workshop.
