Event Details

In 2015, music journalist David James Young did two things – turn 25 and start a podcast that would become one of his greatest passion projects of his career, All My Friends Are in Bar Bands.

It's a podcast that has brought him closer to his heroes and allowed a myriad of musicians – national and international, megastar and DIY alike – to unearth stories from across their entire careers. Amy Shark, Courtney Barnett, Gang of Youths, Ruby Fields, Skegss, Alex Lahey and Hockey Dad are just some of the marquee names that have pulled up stools with David over the years – and that's just the Australian ones.

If you've done some quick calculations, you'll know that 2020 thus marks David's 30th birthday and – more importantly – the fifth birthday of All My Friends Are in Bar Bands. To celebrate in a year that hasn't given us much to celebrate, David will be hosting live episodes of the podcast for the first time in over two years at one of his favourite Sydney venues, The Vanguard.

To make it a worthy effort, he'll also be pledging $1 from every ticket sale to Support Act, who are doing especially important work at a time when it's needed the most in the Australian music industry.

Each live episode will see David joined by three special guests, and will feature plenty of what you've come to expect from Bar Bands episodes: Star-making moments, high-school bands, dream gigs and nightmare tour stories. There'll also be audience questions, and maybe a song or two for good measure.

To give you an idea of what to expect, the guests for the last live episode were Thelma Plum, Frenzal Rhomb's Jay Whalley and the original Red Wiggle, Murray Cook. Sufficed to say, expect the unexpected.

DJY is the guy you see at every gig – when they're on, of course – so why not return the favour so he can see you at his?

David's 30! His podcast is 5! Come grab a drink at the Vanguard and let's swap some stories.
