The Subterraneans

The Subterraneans are thrilled to be launching their brand new studio album ‘Constant Change’ at Mary’s Underground, one of Sydney’s most historic venues!

For many audience members hearing The Subterraneans for the first time will be a hallelujah moment. You’ll think ‘finally a band is combining rock’s visceral energy with jazz’s lithe spontaneity, without compromise’. But this isn’t a new phenomenon - this critically-lauded and popular band has been performing its original brand of funk, world music, reggae-infused rock and jazz for over a decade.

The Subterraneans have released three albums, and sport a roving cast of regular musicians as part of their backline. Award-winning guitarists James Muller and Ben Hauptmann have been band regulars, alongside Thirsty Merc frontman and jazz impresario Rai Thistlewaite, and brilliant jazz drummer James Hauptmann.

Under band leader James Ryan, The Subterraneans is a vehicle for some of Australia’s best young jazz players to cut their teeth in the bluesy, blaring world of pub rock and groove. This gritty foundation of live experience makes the band extremely responsive to what a live audience needs.

The Subterraneans are an all-star high energy band that’ll have you up on your feet and dancing!

‘This is what the fusion of Jazz and Rock always promised but rarely delivered: sophisticated improvising harnessed to raw power.' - John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald

Scoredatura

Have you heard Meshuggah? Animals as Leaders? Have you heard any jazz? Well, Sydney’s Scoredatura are an uneasy, intense mixture of both of those influences.

Formed in 2013, this Sydney outfit takes the harmonic and rhythmic complexity of jazz and runs it through the woodchipper of modern progressive metal.

Dense and rhythmically complex songs like ‘Tense’ showcase the band’s ability to marry melodic lead guitar with bone-crunching rhythm breakdowns and hypnotic turnarounds that loop endlessly back on themselves, before exploding into expansive guitar textures.

Across two records, this instrumental act have showcased a flair for no-nonsense fusion metal, and have welcomed guests like jazz guitarists James Muller and Carl Dewhurst to contribute solos to their work. Led by drummer Tim Firth, this is a metal band who embody the sensitivity and detail that typifies modern tech and prog metal.

Anyone who enjoys modern metal will appreciate Scoredatura's accessible-yet-complex sound, and the casual fan will just enjoy watching blood hit the ceiling fan throughout the set.

Jake Howsam Lowe (Guitar)

Peter Koopman (Guitar)
