On Thursday May 31st the WAVES event returns to the Oxford Art Factory for a second year as part of their official Vivid program; this time with a focus on showcasing some of Australia's hottest young female talent. WAVES is an event, not just a gig, mixing great live music with killer DJ sets and interactive art installations and building into a late-night party celebrating some of the coolest new Australian female curated music and art.
Highlights of Waves II : a celebration of music + art include:
WALLACE - this Sydney-based Kiwi artist is riding high at the moment off the back of her debut EP 'Pole To Pole'. Smashing through tours with Winston Surfshirt, Ngaiire, The Kite String Tangle and Kllo, as well playing to crowds at Aussie festivals such as Listen Out Festival, Lost Paradise, St Kilda Fest, Hills Are Alive and Bigsound. You probably know her as the killer vocal all across the Thundamentals current single 'My Friends Say' or her work with Sampa The Great - but at WAVES you'll have the chance to witness a Wallace set with its mosaic of jazz, blues, hip-hop and soul.
CXLOE - now based in LA Sydney's Cxloe is turning heads and is quickly establishing herself as one of the an important new generation of female pop stars - doing things their own way. Supported by Triplej and courted by major labels Cxloe cut her teeth touring with the likes of George Maple and Alison Wonderland. It would be easy to pigeonhole Cxloe's music as electronic pop - but listen closely to these dark masterpieces and you'll find elements of folk and pop providing an undercurrent of authenticity that's absent in many of her contemporaries.
CSOKE - this young artist first appeared on stage performing with Moza during last years WAVES event under the moniker Doe. That gig was catalyst for an incredible 12-months where the newly named Csoke joined the Top Dog roster and began developing her repertoire with Swedish pop masters at The Kennel (East, Conrad Sewell) and local production legend John Castle (Jack River, Hatchie, Angie McMahon). Csoke is a beautiful contradiction and her unique brand of folktroinca is reminiscent of Beth Orton and Everything But The Girl. WAVES will be the debut performance of her new work.
GIRLS ON DECK - or G.O.D. are a new all-female DJ collective who are gaining a quick reputation for bringing the party with their Sydney launch party being closed down at 3am in full swing. We expect no less for WAVES as the G.O.D. crew will bring the jams between live sets before closing out the night by making you dance yourself clean.
ELISA MERCURIO - Continuing in tradition of the original WAVES event the Oxford Art Factory will be transformed into an artistic canvas for this Adelaide based video director, photographer and creative designer. Elisa will be exhibiting a collection of her most vibrant work and digging deep into the archive crates to put forward some of her favorite collections, whilst also showcasing brand new interactive works created exclusively for WAVES of Vivid. elisamercurio.com
