Julie Fox - Sydney Blues Society ** Helios is the Shane Pacey Trio's second album, a follow up to Watch Out!, and continues to take us on a musical journey, appropriately spreading light, warmth and an abundance of powerful, energizing vibes throughout the seven well-crafted original tracks, and five covers.
Both the opening and closing tracks on the album, Helios Rise and Helios Set, are instrumentals, with the creative collaboration from all band members; Shane Pacey (guitar), Dave Fester (drums/percussion) and Paul Blasi on bass.
These two tracks alone showcase the variety within this beautifully produced and recorded album; the intro to track one lulling us with bird sounds, before bursting through with Shane's powerhouse, sustained guitar licks. This is backed up with a surround sound of solid bass and drumming from Dave and Paul.
Helios Set is a slower paced number; laying bare some intense guitar playing with the use of distortion and searing guitar notes while weaving in and around that steady backbeat.
Shane's trademark, passionate, vocal style combine with impressive guitar playing on the first of his self-penned tracks, Mr. Trouble, before the pace is slowed right down with a nice shuffle beat on Tell Me Baby; complemented by the heartfelt vocals and questionably profound lyrics; "Endings to be useful must be inconclusive." In, a nice laid back style.
Helios showcases a great mix of mellow sounds, alternating with those powerful, rockier beats we are used to from this band; searing guitars, chunky bass notes and hard driven drumming. The Wheel slots nicely into this category; a full tilt, power driven number. Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City (Price / Walsh) leans towards the former; a melancholy tune for a love lost in a cold city, while still retaining that trademark energy with the inclusion of some very dynamic guitar playing. One song I can't go past is one of my favourite Bob Dylan tunes; Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues. This is a very good rendition, and while the tune remains faithful to the original, the style and interpretation by The Shane Pacey Trio, take it up several more notches. From the intense guitar playing and the forceful, dynamic vocals, which, while drawn out in a similar style to Dylan's, are definitely owned by Shane. And then, just as the song appears to reach its climax, in bursts a riff of intense, electrifying guitar playing, taking me totally off guard, to round out one incredibly good track!
With so many first class numbers on this album I will leave the remainder for you to discover and enjoy yourself; you won't be disappointed - that's a guarantee! **
