Niger born desert-psych guitarist Omara 'Bombino' Moctar's dazzling live performance and virtuosity have led notable music critics to compare him to Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Neil Young, and Jerry Garcia.
Renowned for wild live shows with waves of Saharan guitar lines dancing over driving rhythms and epic jams, the band are in the country to play Golden Plains, WOMAD and PANAMA, so the Festival is thrilled to have them in Brunswick's Howler.
With a back story to rival most musicians, Bombino made it into the international music scene after filmmaker Ron Wyman became enchanted with his music upon hearing one of his cassettes while travelling through Bombino's hometown Agadez in Niger. It took Wyman over a year to track Bombino down, eventually finding him in exile in a neighbouring country, before helping Bombino produce his first album in 2011.
Bombino is a member of the Tuareg Ifoghas tribe, a nomadic people descended from the Berbers of North Africa; during his lifetime, the Tuareg people have fought the Niger government to secure their rights on numerous occasions, causing Bombino and his family to flee several times.
His recent album Nomad, recorded with The Black Keys's Dan Auerbach, was deemed "utterly fantastic" by the BBC World Service while Rolling Stone described it as "a perfect match of sound and soul [that] introduces a new guitar hero".
