Jazz standards / quirky Christmas songs

Justine Clarke has been singing jazz all her life, although these days she is best known as a writer/performer of songs for children. She has been a presenter on PlaySchool for 25 years and has released six children’s albums under her own name, mostly in collaboration with Greasy Chicken Orchestra pianist Peter Dasent.

She is well known to Australian television audiences for her roles in Love My Way, Tangle and the Time Of Our Lives In theatre she has had recent critical and popular success in the almost-one-woman play Julia.

For the gig with the GCO she will perform some jazz standards, a couple of obscure quirky Christmas songs and her hit children’s song “ My Shadow And Me”.

Those who know The Greasy Chicken Orchestra will have enjoyed their spirited live shows and will know that they perform in the “Territory Band” tradition of Kansas City, Chicago, and New Orleans jazz of the ’20s and ’30s.

The GCO repertoire includes music from Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Lil Hardin Armstrong, The John Kirby Sextet, Raymond Scott, Scott Joplin, Don Redman, and Duke Ellington. They will perform a suite of brand-new tunes, as well as beloved favourites from their recent CD, I Cakewalked With A Zombie (Earshift).

“…The Greasy Chicken Orchestra offers indisputable evidence that jazz is neither dead nor zombie-fied. (They) are truly post- modern in the sense that they address styles, sounds, and songs drawn from well more than a hundred years of jazz.”
