Event Details

Australia’s leading taiko drumming group, TaikOz, combines with prominent Melbourne DJ/Producer, Max Royce-Hampton in TaikoDeck. This visually spectacular show features an impressive array of taiko drums and percussion instruments. TaikoDeck is a joint collaboration between brothers Max and Tom Royce-Hampton (TaikOz member), with the vision of fusing East and West styles, resulting in a performance not just for the eyes and ears, but felt throughout the entire body!

TAIKO DECK ARTISTS

Max Royce-Hampton

Max was educated at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School on a music scholarship where prominent Melbourne double bass teacher Earl Hunter taught him. In year 12 he bought his first set of turntables and almost immediately began making a name for himself in the DJ scene. Not satisfied with only playing the music of others, Max quickly moved into creating his own music. Since then he has collaborated with a multitude of Melbourne MC's. Max's unique sounds receive acclaim wherever they are heard and he is in demand as on of the hottest young Melbourne producers.

Tom Royce-Hampton

Tom completed his VCE at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary College and a Bachelor of Music Performance at the Victorian College of the Arts School of Music majoring in Percussion. He studied with prominent Melbourne Percussionists Sergi Glovko, Barry Quinn, Guy du Blet and Peter Neville and also Drum Set with Australian jazz great Graeme Morgan. Tom has been performing with TaikOz since June 2005.

Anton Lock

Anton joined TaikOz in 2006 and regularly appears on stage as a taiko player and dancer. In 2008 Anton travelled to Sado Island and was taught Onikenbai, a traditional performing art of Kitakami City, Iwate Prefecture by Yoshikazu Fujimoto of Kodo. Anton is passionate about Onikenbai and is continuing his study in Japan with Yoshikazu Fujimoto and the original Iwasaki Onikenbai masters. Anton attended the Sydney Conservatorium High School and was the first student to perform on taiko for the HSC, receiving top honours.

Sophia Ang

Sophia Ang was named Associate Player in 2012 after successfully auditioning for TaikOz's Individual Development Program in 2011. Sophia now regularly joins TaikOz on the main stage, including the group's recent collaboration and Australian tour with Kodo. Sophia completed a Bachelor of Music and has performed with the Australian Youth Orchestra and the Sydney Symphony Sinfonia.

ROGER VS. THE MAN

Brainchild of lead-singer, guitarist, composer and producer Roger Lock, Roger Vs. The Man is renowned for its intricately powerful synthesis of rock, jazz and classical elements. The band is proud to call the stage 'home'. Their live energy is unstoppable, the message loud and clear: play with fire, salute your beliefs.

The debut album 'Black Pearl' is an opus that features tracks from the politically charged to the velvety romantic. Scored for an ensemble of mini-orchestral proportions, it credits some of Sydney's best orchestral, jazz and underground session players, all high on character and pumped on technique. United under one banner, Roger Vs. The Man delivers an epic live show.

"Chilled lovechild of The Cat Empire and Blue King Brown, the instrumental explosion midway through Roger Vs. The Man's debut album is enough to punch you in the sternum and throw you across the room." - Sharni Honor, 'RIP IT UP'
