The Avalanches

There are few living musicians as influential and wholly original as world renowned recording artists, producers and DJs, The Avalanches. Their debut album Since I Left You, released in 2000, laid the blueprint for the future of sample-based music in the 21st century. Effortlessly weaving an exuberant musical kaleidoscope from over 3,500 vinyl samples from the obscure (Peruvian princess Yma Sumac) to the iconic (Madonna’s “Holiday”), its influence can still be felt in the work of artists such as ?uestlove, Jamie XX, DJ Koze and Animal Collective today. Similarly, their follow up album, 2016’s Wildflower, sits on a patchwork of samples that includes works by calypsonian Wilmoth Houdini, the teenage punk-funk of Chandra, Moog scientist Mort Garson and a cosmic kids band playing ‘Come Together’ (a sample personally approved by both Sir Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono), earning the band a gold record in Australia and critical acclaim across the globe.

It's not only through their studio albums that The Avalanches have made a mark on the musical landscape though. Their cult-famous Gimix mixtape, released as a very limited run of cassettes in 2000, is now a heavily coveted collectible and ushered in a decade of mashups, inspiring the likes of Girl Talk, 2manyDJs and Erol Alkan. In fact, their mixing skills are so well respected that when Fatboy Slim first met the band he bowed down and kissed their feet.

As DJs alone, they have performed everywhere from Melbourne’s infamous monthly club night Brains, where they mixed Soca into West African Highlife guitar music into rare edits of 1980s acid house tracks, to the main stage at some of the biggest festivals in the world, like Creamfields in 2001 and moving tens of thousands of people at Primavera in 2016. Fans are so keen to get a hold of their mixes that when they uploaded a bunch to their website for free download, the website crashed from the overwhelming demand.

Grievous Bodily Calm

Combining IDM, Jazz-Fusion, Rock, Hip Hop, and experimental improvisation to produce unique compositions, local heroes Grievous Bodily Calm have become mainstays on the Aus gig and festival circuit. Since forming in late 2016 the band have had quick success, performing at Falls Festival, Gizzfest, Camp Doogs and supporting artists including Winston Surfshirt, Jordan Rakei, Sex on Toast and Donny Benet. In September 2017 the band released their debut album ‘Thought Tapes Live’ – a seven track live album capturing the audience’s active engagement with their adventurous constructions. The band has spent the early part of 2018 recording their debut studio album, ‘Repel’, including the single ‘Footwork’. ‘Repel’ shows further attention on unconventional structures and strong melodies.
