Viol women - The Female Composers Project

A string instrument as rare as the electric viola da gamba demands brand new repertoire!

‘Viol Women’ continues a journey into new musical territory that viola da gambist and band leader Jenny Eriksson and her group Elysian Fields undertook five years ago in partnership with saxophonist Matt Keegan and pianist Matt McMahon.

With two highly regarded albums behind them, the glacial wonder and spectral folk of Elysian Fields propelled the group to national acclaim, and their most recent project has been to commission female composers to write for their unique lineup of saxophone, voice/violin, electric viola da gamba, piano, double bass, and drums.

Eriksson sought out a broad range of female musicians to contribute material for this project, including band member Susie Bishop alongside her singer/songwriter sister Laura – mainstays of world music outfit Chaika. The text to Laura Bishop’s song will be delivered by her sister Susie in J.R.R. Tolkien’s original Elvish!

Other contributors include pianist/flautist Keyna Wilkins, Alice Chance, fusion keyboardist Freyja Garbett and Eriksson herself. Gordon Kerry is a renowned composer of the classical world, and is featured here in a work written especially for the ensemble.

Rafael Karlen Quintet  ft. Nadje Noordhuis

Award-winning composer and saxophonist Rafael Karlen will be joined by acclaimed Australian improvising musicians to perform their new album ‘Equally True’. For this show, the group will feature internationally renowned trumpet player Nadje Noordhuis.

Alongside an extended suite originally commissioned for the Brisbane International Jazz Festival, this material was written while Rafael was composer-in-residence at the prestigious Peggy Glanville-Hicks House.

The ‘Arrivals and Prospects’ suite is an extended work exploring charged landscapes of nostalgia and lingering reflection, and anticipation at future destinations.
