BOB BARNARD WITH IAN DATE - "JUST MY LUCK" ALBUM LAUNCH
Expatriate Australian guitarist Ian Date teams up with the trumpet legend Bob Barnard to launch their new album. Ian has been living in Europe since 2002 and tours Australia every year. He was keen to get Bob into the studio and earlier this year they managed an afternoon’s recording. They decided on an intimate two guitar and double bass format for the project and are ably assisted in this endeavour by Nigel Date on acoustic guitar and Jonathan Zwartz on double bass. Don’t miss this rare and intimate jazz experience!
BOB BARNARD
One of the great jazz trumpeters of Australia, Bob Barnard has generally favoured performing trad and pre-bop jazz. The younger brother of the fine drummer Len Barnard, he started playing jazz with a family band in 1947 and was in Len's group during much of the 1947-55 period. Barnard also led his own band and, after moving to Sydney in 1957, he worked with Graeme Bell and gigged locally. Barnard first came to the U.S. in 1978, where he was a hit at the Bix Beiderbecke festival in Davenport, Iowa, and has since appeared at a variety of American festivals. He debuted on records as a leader as early as 1952, made sets for Swaggie, Calligraph and Sackville (1995), among others, and also recorded with Ralph Sutton. Bob Barnard's excellent technique, solid tone and swinging style have made him a popular attraction in the trad jazz world.
IAN DATE
Ian Date has been playing the guitar since he was a child and began his professional career in the mid 1970's. He has written music for TV and film, appeared on television, radio and theatre and played on more than 70 albums. He is rightly regarded as one of Australia's great guitar players. Ian has performed all over Australia and 37 other countries at various festivals and events. Equally at home on the acoustic and electric guitar, Ian's playing is firmly rooted in the jazz tradition. He has his own engaging style and he brings his intelligence, craft, musicality, skill and humour to all his projects. Critics have described his playing and performances as lyrical, endlessly inventive, masterful and his live performances as thoroughly entertaining. Since 2002 he has based himself in Ireland.
