Artist and multi-instrumentalist Benjamin Skepper returns to Howler to present a new audio visual performance “Shadow” in his hometown, Melbourne.

You may know Skepper for his music. He’s been performing with cello and keyboard instruments for over 20 years, schooled in the classical tradition and imbued with the restless spirit of a pioneer.

Or you might know Benjamin as a field scientist. His studies include electronics, recording techniques and the music-making potential of the human body. Some of his work even resides in orbit on a satellite, waiting to make connection with our nearest neighbours.

Perhaps you’ve heard of Benjamin Skepper the audio-visual collaborator? In March this year he was commissioned to create a work in response to Nakaya Fujiko’s much-loved fog sculpture “Foggy wake in a desert” at the National Gallery of Australia. Skepperwas recently invited back to Moscow, headlining Fields Festival and Cosmoscow Art Fair with theremin exponent Peter Theremin. In a world first,Skepper also co-produced the first audio visual concert of original compositions at the Moscow State Conservatory, “Praeludium & Fuga”, in collaboration with leading Russian multimedia design collective Radugadesign.

Or maybe this is the first time you’re hearing his name? His tireless international schedule makes a sighting of Benjamin Skepper in the wild very rare indeed. So please don’t miss this encore performance at Howler. Skepper will be joined by Tokyo collaborator Tomoya Kishimoto (the duo have previously presented at MOFO 2013, the Corner Hotel and The Toff in Town). For “Monochrome”, 10 visual projectors will be installed at Howler to create a totally immersive experience. You haven’t seen anything like this, because there is nothing else like it. And there’s no one like Benjamin Skepper.

As is customary with Skepper’s art happenings, the evening will also feature a floral installation by Rosaria Darling (Jessica Skepper), creating her 4th installation, part of ongoing contrapuntal collaborations between the prodigious Skepper siblings. And very special guest and long time friend Simon Winkler (RRR FM) will set the mood for what promises to be a progressive evening of sight and sound.
